The law firm of Steptoe & Johnson was established in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1913, and soon became prominent in the fields of banking, insurance, litigation, mineral and public utility law.
The firm subsequently opened offices in Charleston, West Virginia and Washington, District of Columbia After experiencing significant additional growth on a national basis, in 1980 the firm divided into two separate law firms -- in West Virginia and Washington, District of Columbia -- each continuing its practice under the name Steptoe & Johnson. In 1988 the firm established an office in Morgantown and in 1990 merged with Avey & Steptoe, a well-established firm with offices in Martinsburg and Charles Town. In 1994, the firm opened an office in Wheeling, West Virginia, and in 1995 became affiliated with Ruley & Everett, a well-established firm in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
