Van Winckel holds a Union of European Football Associations Pro-license and graduated with a Master of Physical Education and a Master in Business Economics from the University of Leuven.
He remains faculty of the Movement Control & Neuroplasticity Research Group. In 2006 he co-founded TopSportsLab, a spin-off that develops sports science innovations. Before signing as technical director of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation in 2015, Van Winckel was the assistant of Marcelo Bielsa at Olympique de Marseille.
