Career
He was drafted in the 4th round (110th Overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2000 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Newman played for the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors of the North American Hockey League during the 1997-1998 season. During the 1998-1999 season, Newman joined the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.
Newman played for four seasons with the Whalers, and was captain from 2000-2002.
In 2002, Newman was selected to play for the Florida Everblades of the East Coast Hockey League. Newman played for the Everblades during the 2002-2003 season and part of the 2003-2004 season, before going to play for the former Lowell Lock Monsters (now Lowell Devils) of the American Hockey League.
