Jared Lawrence Rathbone, American capitalist, soldier. Decorated by French government as Officer Legion of Honor, for special and brilliant services rendered to France.


Rathbone, Jared Lawrence was born on September 28, 1844 in Albany, New York, United States. Son of Jared Lewis and Pauline N. (Pinney) Rathbone.


Stepson of the United States Senator Ira Harris. Preparatory education Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Graduate West Point, 1865.

Entered 12th infantry and was transferred 1st United States artillery. Aide-de-camp to Lieutenant General Schofield, 1866-1873. Resigned from army, 1873.


Developed the noted Palo Alto ranch, on which Leland Stanford Junior U. is now located. Appointed consul general of the United States to Paris, France, 1887-1891. Served in war with Spain as special aide at headquarters div. of the Pacific, on staffs General Merriam, Wesley, Merritt and Otis.


Married Miss M. A. Atherton, February 20, 1871.
