Entered 12th infantry and was transferred 1st United States artillery. Aide-de-camp to Lieutenant General Schofield, 1866-1873. Resigned from army, 1873.
Developed the noted Palo Alto ranch, on which Leland Stanford Junior U. is now located. Appointed consul general of the United States to Paris, France, 1887-1891. Served in war with Spain as special aide at headquarters division of the Pacific, on staffs General Merriam, Wesley, Merritt and Otis.
Married Miss M. A. Atherton, February 20, 1871.
