These four plays by celebrated Canadian dramatist Jason Sherman bring works by three Russian masters kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century. The Brothers Karamazov captures the spirit, scope, and dark humor of Dostoevsky's novel. Gorky's unknown gem Enemies and Chekhov's bright farce The Bear are given vibrant, contemporary language. After the Orchard, inspired by Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, is placed in contemporary Ontario cottage country.

playwright screenwriter author
Jason Sherman was born on July 28, 1962 in Montreal, Canada; the son of Cyril and Grace (Gangbar) Sherman.
Jason Sherman received a Bachelor of Arts from York University in 1985.
Early in his career, Jason Sherman was a founder and editor of the literary magazine "what" and the editor of the 1991 anthology Canadian Brash, which provided a forum for two playwrights, two fiction writers, and one poet hailed as among the most promising in Canada.
Sherman's next anthology, 1994's Solo: Intoxicating Hybrids of Theatre and Fiction, is a collection of twelve performance pieces for a solo actor, all of which had previously been produced on the stage.
It was as playwright rather than editor, however, that Sherman achieved a reputation for producing comedy with a serious core. His 1995 work, The League of Nathans, presents three Jewish friends, all named Nathan, who had formed a club (named in the play's title) in childhood and who, in adulthood, go their separate ways while reuniting occasionally for support. The protagonist, Nathan Abramowitz, is obsessed with the question of what it means to be a good Jew and dissatisfied with all the self-assured answers given to him by the people he asks.
In 1996, Sherman wrote The Retreat, which concerns a romantic and artistic triangle with historical overtones. Among his many other plays are Three in the Back, Two in the Head, Reading Hebron and A Place Like Pamela.
From 1992 to 1999 Jason was a playwright-in-residence at the Tarragon Theatre. He has written for television and radio, including the CBC Radio series Afghanada and the television series Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures and The Best Laid Plans.
