Regents Professor is the highest faculty rank bestowed at the university, an honor reserved for the top 3% of scholars. He founded both the Management Information System department (ranked top 5 in the country by United States News & World Report for the past 20 years) in 1974, and the Center for the Management of Information in 1985 at the University of Arizona. Nunamaker has served as major professor to over 80 doctoral students from 1968–present.

Jay Nunamaker has been featured in the July 1997 Forbes magazine issue on technology as one of eight key innovators in information technology. In a 2005 article in Communications of the Association for Information Systems, he was recognized as one of the most productive information systems researchers, ranking northern
4 to 6 for the period from 1991-2003 based on the number of papers in top Instruction Section journals.
