Young was a graduate of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Jay was a staff member on future Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards" election team in 1971 before moving on to become a popular regional print journalist (Opelousas, Louisiana Daily World) and newscaster in Lafayette, Louisiana KATC television 3 in 1975-1976 and in Baton Rouge on WAFB-television 9 in the late 1970s and on WBRZ-television in the early 1980s to mid-1980s, the latter newscast was reportedly the highest rated American Broadcasting Company-television newscast for a market its size in the country. Young later published three novels (in the 1990s):Where Heathens Pray, Smuggler"s Forecast, and Flights of Fantsy.
He died of a heart attack on August 23, 2006 at the age of 56.
