He is the current Cabinet Minister of Rural Development in the state of Maharashtra in Western India. Patil has a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from VJTI, Mumbai. In 1999, he had an opportunity to take over as Minister, Finance and Planning, Maharashtra making him the youngest ever finance minister of the state.
He continued as the finance minister of the state for 9 years and presented the annual state budget a record 9 times.
He was made home minister after the previous home minister resigned. As a Home minister, Jayant Patil was responsible for initiating Force One, Maharashtra"s anti-terrorism Quick Response Team.
