The artist’s career can be divided figuratively into three periods. So, from 1964 to 1975, Vanderheyden tried his hand in various media, including computer graphics, sound equipment, photography and printing. At this time, JCJ collaborated with Leon Adriaans and Richard Menken.

At the middle of the 1970s, Vanderheyden continued his artistic experiments and began to produce the replicas of his own artworks as well as of the art by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel or Velasquez. The copies were presented in the form of installations which the artist took photos of or recorded on the video.

The next decade of Vanderheyden’s professional journey was marked by the presentation of the fragments and parts of his works. Combining his early and present creations, JCJ Vanderheyden tried to express the connection between space and time.

Despite his career as an artist, JCJ Vanderheyden also transmitted his artistic knowledge to younger generations. So, from 1987 he had held the teacher’s post at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam. He was often invited as a guest lecturer too.
