He was schooled at the Jesuit college in Blois.
He joined the cavalry in 1742, rising to marechalmarechal de camp in 1761.
In 1780 he was made lieutenant-general and sent to the United States as commander of an army of 6, 000 men.
He debarked at Newport, Rhod Island and in 1781 joined forces with Washington. Together with the American general and the Marquis de Lafayette he forced the capitulation of General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.
The American Congress recognized his services by the presentation of two cannons captured from the English. After his return to France, Rochambeau became governor of Picardy and later participated in the second assembly of the notables in 1788.
He took command of the Army of the North in 1790, became marshal in 1791, and resigned the next year.
Imprisoned under the Terror, he was saved by the events of the Thermidor and retired to his estate at Vendome.
He was made grand officer of the Legion of Honor by Napoleon, and received a pension.
Rochambeau died at Thore (Loire-et-Cher) on May 10, 1807.
