Joined as head microgravity & space station utilisation department European Space Agency, 1986, various positions including associate director strategy, planning & international policy, director strategy & technical assessment, then director launchers, 2001—2003, director general, since 2003. Professor National Higher Institute Aeronautics & Space, Toulouse, France, 1973—1987.

Senior lecturer mechanical engineering Ecole Polytechnique (Polytechnic School), Palaiseau, France, 1977—1993. Executive secretary evaluation committee Japanese Space Agency, 1997—1998. Honorary chancellor International Space University, France.
