Jean Duvet was born in 1485, in Langres, France.
He lived in Langres, and perhaps also in Dijon, and the Italian style of his engravings indicates that he probably spent his youth in that country. He is known to have been goldsmith to Francis I and Henry II of France and was one of the earliest French engravers. His most famous plates are his 23 illustrations of the Apocalypse (1546 - 1555), which earned for him the title of "maître de la licorne" (master of the unicorn), in token of the frequency with which that mythical animal appears in the illustrations.
