Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high-quality product, each title has been meticulously hand-curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue.

Forain was born on January 20, 1852, in Reims, France in the family of weavers. In 1860 he came with his parents to Paris.
He studied at the Higher School of Fine Arts with Karpo and Jerome.
He became one of the leading modern Parisian caricaturists, who in his merciless exposure of the weaknesses of the bourgeoisie continued the work which was begun by Daumier under the second Empire. The scathing bitterness of his satire is as clearly derived from Daumier as his pictorial style can be traced to Manet and Degas; but even in his painting he never suppresses the caustic spirit that drives him to caricature. Forian participated in the Franco-Prussian War. Several times he was exhibited with the Impressionists. The first personal exhibition took place in 1890 in the gallery of Theo van Gogh. In 1921 he presented Rimes with a large collection of his drawings. Forian died on October 23, 1931. He was buried in the town of Le Cheyenne near Versailles.

Quotes from others about the person
He has, indeed, been rightly called "a Degas pushed on to caricature".
