Jean Hewitt was born on August 15, 1925, in Ipswich, England. When Jean was 23 years old, she came to the United States.
Hewitt studied at the Westminster School for Chefs in London. She also held degrees in food and nutrition from the University of London and Columbia University.
Hewitt devoted her career to the study of culinary arts, first as the head of the home economics department at Evans Research and Development Corp., beginning in 1953. She began work at the New York Times in 1961 as a food reporter and critic. She established a test kitchen for the Times in 1969 and began testing recipes and various foods. Hewitt later joined the staff of Family Circle magazine as its food editor. She stayed at the publication from 1975 to 1993. Hewitt retired in 1993. During her career, she was a Culinary Institute of America fellow (lifetime).
Mrs. Hewitt wrote a number of New York Times Cook Books, including ''Main Dish,'' ''Heritage'' and ''Weekend.'' Her ''Large Type Cook Book'' and ''New Natural Foods Cook Book'' were forerunners in their respective fields, as was her ''International Meatless Cook Book.'' Four of her books received James Beard Food and Beverage Book Awards.

1978Jean's first husband, Dr. Eric J. Hewitt, whom she married in 1949, died in 1976. In 1983, she married James Blair, who survives her. She is also survived by two sons, Gordon Hewitt and Geoffrey Hewitt.
