Studied under Schelling in Munich and under Cousin in Paris.

From 1870, Curator of Antiquities at the Louvre, where he became known for his examination of the Venus de Milo.
Under the the influence of Scottish commonsense philosophy, opposed to both the eclecticism of Cousin and to positivism. Ravaisson-Mollien developed in ‘spiritualism’ a type of metaphysical theism. Opposed to materialism he professed opposition also to idealism, though with the dominating role ascribed to consciousness, the tendencies of his own work were idealistic. It was very influential in the third quarter of the nineteenth century and was still being discussed early in the twientieth century. Lachelier, Emile Boutroux and Henri Bergson are regarded as to varying extents his disciples. He played an important role in the founding of the Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale.
