She served consecutively in the South Dakota Legislature from January 2001 until January 2007 in the South Dakota House of Representatives District 18 seat. Hunhoff was the mayor of Yankton from 1995 until 1997. 2004 Hunhoff and incumbent Representative Matt Michels were unopposed for both the June 1, 2004 Republican Primary and the November 2, 2004 General election where Representative Michels took the first seat and Hunhoff took the second seat with 5,993 votes (4661%).
2010 Hunhoff was unopposed for both the June 8, 2010 Republican Primary and the November 2, 2010 General election, winning with 5,915 votes.
