Dans les années 1950, entraîné dans un trafic de devises, Horcier, un petit employé français, est poursuivi par des tueurs à Saigon en Indochine (colonie française). Il trouve refuge dans le village de Vinh-Bao, en territoire Viet-Minh (c'est-à-dire non occupé par l'armée française), où il découvre les conditions de vie des habitants soumis à l'armée Viet-Minh : la famine, le pillage des récoltes de riz et la maladie. Horcier prend peu à peu parti pour ce peuple...

Several of these novels are collected in a series named Louisiana Nuit Indochinoise ("The Indochina Night") and include several best sellers, such as Tu récolteras la tempête ("Reap the Wirlwind"). He began his professional life as a teacher of English and Sciences in north-western towns, then moved south to Marseille to work for one year with an import-export trading firm. This firm then sent him to Indochina in June 1947.
From there on, he exercised several trades, travelling across Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Southern China, while learning to speak some of the regional languages.
In 1949, he returned to Saigon, Vietnam, where he worked at the United States Consulate and then at Radio France Asie, the Asian branch of the French state-owned radio broadcasting corporation. He returned to France in 1951.
He died on 22 May 2001 in Paris.
