Ballard earned a degree in geophysics from Stanford University and worked as a geophysicist in Montana. Following his career, Ballard returned to his hometown of Billings, where he has become an instrumental part of local American Legion Baseball programs. He served for three years as the pitching coach for the Laurel Dodgers, and has served since 2002 as the Board Chairman for the Billings program.
In 1998 he was inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame as one of Stanford University's top pitchers, holding the all-time record in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched for more than 20 years, as well as earning First Team All-Pac-10 twice. In 2004, Baltimore Orioles fans voted Ballard one of their 50 best loved Orioles.
He is currently a member of the Brad Mehldau Trio and co-leader of Fly, a collective trio with Mark Turner and Larry Grenadier.
