She is Distinguished Professor within the Louisiana Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, Louisiana Trobe University, Australia and Professor Emeritus of the Australian National University. Graves was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1941. She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Adelaide in 1964, and an Master of Science in 1967.
She then received a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971 for her work on the control of deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1991, Graves became professor of genetics at Louisiana Trobe University. In 1999, Graves was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
