(Excerpt from Pilgrim Walks in Franciscan Italy Presently...)
Excerpt from Pilgrim Walks in Franciscan Italy Presently we emerged into the wide plain between the vineyards, where the verdant branches of the vines hang like festoons from tree to tree. In the far distance, above the purple hills, the crests of the snow clad mountains were discernible, glistening in the sun shine. The train stopped; we were in Greccio. The cool air from the moun tains met us as we passed out of the small station to the highroad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Born to a prosperous cloth merchant of Assisi, Francis (1...)
Born to a prosperous cloth merchant of Assisi, Francis (1182-1226) lived the typically high-spirited life of a wealthy young man of his day, which included fighting as a soldier. In 1205, while away at war, he experienced a vision that beckoned him return to Assisi, where he soon lost his taste for the worldly life and began to live a life of evangelical poverty in imitation of Jesus Christ. He embarked upon a pilgrimage to Rome, where he begged for alms alongside the poor at St. Peter's Basilica. Upon his return to Assisi, be began to preach in the town square and soon acquired a curious following which blossomed into a worldwide religious order. The Franciscans sparked a spiritual revival that enlightened the Dark Ages and that continues even into our day. Johannes Jorgensen (18661956) is best known outside his native Denmark for his popular biography of St. Francis of Assisi, which he wrote in 1907. As a student in Copenhagen, he searched in vain for truth in various secular and spiritual philosophies. But his 1894 visit to Assisi, with his friend Mogens Ballin, a Jewish convert to Catholicism, led to a turning point in Jorgensen's own spiritual life and quest for truth and marked the beginning of his fervent love for Francis, a love that became the preoccupation of his life and led to his conversion to Catholicism in 1896. His timeless biography of Francis of Assisi continues to inspire readers from all creeds and cultures.

Jens Johannes Jørgensen was born on November 6, 1866, in Svendborg, Denmark.
In 1884, Johannes Jørgensen studied at the University of Copenhagen. He was influenced by the writing and work of Georg Brandes, and attracted by socialism and radicalism.
In 1887, he published first poems. In 1888, Jørgensen quit his studies to become a journalist to support his family. Five years later he was unpaid editor of the art magazine Taarnet (The Tower), in which he advocated a more spiritual, mystical approach to life. Later he earned a living by lecturing and writing, visiting catholic groups in Europe. Johannes Jørgensen lived mainly in Italy, in particular Assissi. Hereafter he wrote biographies of St. Francis of Assiss (1907) and St. Catherine of Siena (1915). Later he left Italy because of his opposition to fascism. Jørgensen spent the war years in Denmark and Sweden. In mid-1940s, he returned to Italy. But, in 1953, he moved back to Denmark because of ill-health.
Johannes Jørgensen died on May 29, 1956, almost 90 years old.
