He was born at Fly, Jutland, Sept. 10, 1866. As a boy he became intimately acquainted with the world of nature. He worked as a cowherd and had a meager schooling until, at 18, he went to Copenhagen to study at the university.

Returning to his home community, he wrote stories of peasant life, among them the novels Bondens SønSon (1899) ("The Farmer's Son"); Vredens BørnBorn (1904) ("The Children of Wrath"); Hvor BønderBonder bor (1908) ("Where Farmers Live"); and Arbejdets Glade (1914) ("The Joy of Work"). He also wrote several plays, notably Livet paa Hegnsgaard (1907) ("Life at the Hegn Farm"), and short stories and poems.
Aakjar also wrote a monumental biography (1903-1904) of Steen Steensen Blicher, his predecessor as a Jutland poet.
