Background
He was born in Folkestone, Kent, and was eductaed at The Harvey Grammar School, the University of Warwick (Bachelor French & Theatre Studies, 1980), the University of Bristol (Master of Arts French Drama & Theatre History, 1982) and the University of East Anglia (Master of Arts Creative Writing, 1994).

Career
He is the founding editor of The Frogmore Papers. He lived in Italy in the 1980s and now teaches at the University of Sussex. His poetry and short stories have been published in magazines like Acumen, Aesthetica, Agenda (poetry journal), Ambit (magazine), Magma and Seam, and in numerous anthologies.
He has published five collections of poems, including The Alternative Version,, and most recently Closing Time.
His work has been translated into German and Romanian and has been published in Ireland, Germany and the United States. In 2011 the Ashley Press published his translations of Catullus"s Lesbia poems as The Cost of All Desire.
He has read his work widely with poets such as Peter Reading (Folkestone Library, 1995), Judith Kazantzis (Lauderdale House, 2005), Hugo Williams (Dulwich Festival, 2006) and Grace Nichols (Chiddingly Festival, 2008).
