The classification systems are based on detailed analyses of vessel shapes and ornamentation, supported by shape and pattern charts and numerous tables and illustrations.

Jeremy B. Rutter was born on June 23, 1946, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He is the son of Peter and Nancy Kendall (Comstock) Rutter.
Rutter graduated from Haverford College with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974.
Jeremy Rutter is an emeritus professor in the classics department at Dartmouth College, where he had taught Greek archaeology for 35 years since 1976. His research has focused on Bronze Age Aegean ceramics, relative chronology, and interregional exchange within the eastern Mediterranean.
During his career, Rutter also served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971.
