Jerome Powell is an American lawyer and the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve. He also served as Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance.
Background
Jerome Powell was born on February 4, 1953 in Washington, District of Columbia, United Sates. He is a son of Patricia (Hayden) Powell and Jerome Powell. His maternal grandfather, James J. Hayden, was Dean of the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University of America. Powell also has one brother and four sisters.
Education
Jerome Powell finished Georgetown Preparatory School in 1971. He studied at Princeton University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. Later, he earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1979.
Jerome Powell started his career as an editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Journal. Later, he moved to New York City and took up the post of a clerk to Judge Ellsworth Van Graafeiland of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1979. In 1981, Powell took up a position as a lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell. In 1983, he left this post and became a lawyer at Werbel & McMillen, where he worked for a year. He also worked as a lawyer at Dillon, Read & Co. from 1984 to 1990.
In 1990, Powell became an Assistant Secretary at the United States Department of the Treasury and, in 1992, he was appointed Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance. In 1993, he became managing director for Bankers Trust, but he left this post in 1995. Powell was a partner at The Carlyle Group from 1997 to 2000. At the same time, he founded and led the Industrial Group within the Carlyle United States Buyout Fund.
Jerome Powell became a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors on May 25, 2012 to fill an unexpired term. He was reappointed to the Board and sworn in on June 16, 2014 for a term, ending January 31, 2028. In 2017, President of the United States Donald Trump nominated Powell to serve as the Chair of the Federal Reserve. Powell took office as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on February 5, 2018 for a four-year term.
In addition to service on corporate boards, Powell served as a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Besides, Jerome Powell has served on the boards of charitable and educational institutions, including DC Prep, a public charter school, the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University and The Nature Conservancy. Also, he founded the Center City Consortium.
Jerome Powell is an American lawyer, governor and politician, known as the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve. He is a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Also, Powell served as Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance under President George H. W. Bush.
According to Forbes magazine, Jerome Powell ranked eleventh among the most influential people in the world in 2018. He is also the wealthiest member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Politics
As a governor of the Federal Reserve Board, Jerome Powell worked on issues, related to the benchmark interest rate, known as LIBOR. He has called for less regulation for small and medium-sized banks and for an overhaul of government housing finance agencies.
Jerome Powell supports the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, but he believes, that this reform can be carried out more effectively. He also said, that the Volcker Rule should be re-written in order to exclude smaller banks. Powell also believes, that the government is responsible for mortgage defaults and that lending standards are too rigid. He noticed, that this problem can be solved by encouraging ample amounts of private capital to support housing finance activities.
Jerome Powell is a Republican. In 2008, he invested about $30,000 in the election campaign of John McCain, who ran for President of the United States.
