He graduated from West De Pere High School in De Pere, Wisconsin, as well as the University of Wisconsin–Platteville.
He taught school and was in the building construction business. During World World War II, Van Sistine served in the United States Navy. He died on January 20, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer"s disease.
Van Sistine was first elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 1976, as a Democrat, representing the 30th district.
In 1990, Van Sistine was a candidate for the United States House of Representatives from Wisconsin"s 8th congressional district. He lost to incumbent Toby Roth.
Van Sistine was defeated for re-election in 1992 by Gary Drzewiecki.
Additionally, he was a member of the Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin Town Board and the Brown County, Wisconsin Board of Supervisors.
