Career

Served as Second lieutenant Mounted Riflemen (now 3d Cavalry), United States Army, 1852-1854. Resigned commission, became Second lieutenant French Army after outbreak of Crimean War, 1854, served in battles of Balaklava, Inkermann, 1854. Decorated Legion of Honor.

Commissioned captain French Army, 1859, major, 1865, lieutenant colonel, 1870. Commanded a regiment Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871. Lived in American after downfall of Napoleon III.
