Jerre L. Stead is an American business executive whose career included leadership of Honeywell, Square D, AT&T Global Information Solutions, Legent, Ingram Micro, IHS, and Clarivate. He later became active in corporate governance, higher education, healthcare philanthropy, Methodist institutions, and impact investing.
Background
Jerre L. Stead was born on January 8, 1943, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to H. Victor Stead and Anna Catherine Grindrod Stead. Maquoketa is a small Jackson County community in eastern Iowa, and Stead's early life remained connected to the state through his education, marriage, and later philanthropy.
Stead met Mary Joy Kloppenburg while they were teenagers in Maquoketa, and they married on December 26, 1961. During their years at the University of Iowa, the couple supported their family while completing their studies; Stead worked during college, including employment with a drafting crew and seasonal work for the county engineer.
Education
Stead earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1965. The university, founded in 1847, is Iowa's flagship public research institution and has long combined professional education with research and public service. He later completed the Harvard University Advanced Management Program in 1982, an executive education program designed for experienced managers and business leaders.
His education preceded a career that moved from industrial management into technology, information services, corporate restructuring, and board governance. The combination of business training and executive management education supported his progression through increasingly international and technology-oriented leadership roles.
Stead began his corporate career at Honeywell in 1965 and spent 21 years with the company in management positions in the United States and Europe. His documented assignments included regional sales in Philadelphia, production and distribution leadership in Minneapolis, finance and administration in Brussels, and executive responsibility for Honeywell-Phillips Medical Electronics. Honeywell was a major American industrial and technology company whose businesses included automation, controls, aerospace, and medical electronics.
In 1987, Stead became president and chief operating officer of Square D Company, a manufacturer of electrical distribution and factory-automation products. He later served as chairman, president, and chief executive officer through 1991. Square D operated in the industrial electrical-equipment sector, where automation and power-distribution technologies were central to manufacturing modernization.
Stead joined AT&T in 1991 and led its Global Information Solutions business, associated with NCR Corporation, after previously serving as president and chief executive officer of AT&T Global Business Communications Systems. His tenure coincided with the restructuring of AT&T's communications and information-technology businesses during the rapid expansion of enterprise computing and digital networks.
In 1995, Stead became chairman and chief executive officer of Legent Corporation. After Legent's merger with Computer Associates, he joined Ingram Micro in 1996 as chairman and chief executive officer. Ingram Micro was a major distributor and service provider in the information-technology supply chain; during Stead's leadership, the company expanded from an approximately $8 billion business to one operating at roughly $30 billion in annual scale and serving more than 120 countries.
Stead became executive chairman of IHS Inc. in 2000 and assumed the chief executive officer role in 2006. IHS supplied information, analytics, and specialized data to businesses and governments, and Stead led the company through its public-market expansion, including its 2005 initial public offering. IHS later became part of IHS Markit.
He subsequently served as chief executive officer of Churchill Capital Corp and became chief executive officer and executive chair of Clarivate following the 2019 merger that created the company. Clarivate provides information and analytics used in research, innovation, intellectual property, and related professional fields. Stead retired as Clarivate's chief executive in 2022 and was appointed chairman emeritus after leaving its board.
In 2023, Stead founded Stead Impact Ventures, where he serves as board chair. The venture works with companies and organizations pursuing health and wellbeing goals, including efforts related to serious diseases and medical innovation. His later public work has combined executive experience with corporate governance, nonprofit leadership, higher-education support, and philanthropy.
Stead led Ingram Micro through a period of major international expansion, during which the technology distributor grew from an approximately $8 billion business to one operating at roughly $30 billion in annual scale and serving more than 120 countries.
As executive chairman and chief executive of IHS, Stead guided the information and analytics company through its public-market expansion and helped establish it as a significant provider of specialized business information.
Stead and Mary Joy Stead made major philanthropic commitments to the University of Iowa, including support for business education, technology services, pediatric medicine, faculty chairs, and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Stead founded Stead Impact Ventures in 2023 to support innovators and organizations working on health, wellbeing, and impact-oriented business objectives.
Religion
Stead is a Methodist. Methodism emerged from the eighteenth-century revival associated with John Wesley and developed within Protestant Christianity through an emphasis on personal faith, disciplined religious practice, scriptural study, and social responsibility.
His religious commitments have also been expressed through long-standing support for Methodist higher education and theological institutions. He served as chairman of the board of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and supported the Jerre L. and Mary Joy Stead Center for Ethics and Values, connecting his philanthropy with Christian education and ethical reflection.
Politics
Stead is identified with the Republican Party, although his public career has centered on corporate leadership, governance, education, and philanthropy rather than elected office. The Republican tradition in the United States has generally emphasized constitutional government, private enterprise, economic growth, and national technological strength, while encompassing changing conservative and moderate currents during Stead's career.
Views
Stead's public philosophy emphasizes responsible leadership, ethical corporate governance, teamwork, accountability, and innovation. In later discussions of Stead Impact Ventures, he has described impact as a central purpose of investment, linking profitability with the goal of improving health, wellbeing, and society.
His philanthropic work reflects a belief that business leadership should be connected with education, healthcare, faith-based service, and long-term institutional development. He has supported the view that strong organizations require both effective performance and responsibility to the communities they serve.
Membership
Stead's organizational participation has included professional, educational, corporate-governance, religious, and nonprofit institutions. He served with the American Lung Association, The Washington Center, North Carolina A&T University, Coe College, the University of Iowa, the Illinois Business RoundTable, the National Association of Electrical Distributors, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and other civic organizations.
