Robinson was born on December 18, 1939 in Danville, Illinois, United States; the son of Melvin Barto and Elizabeth Jane (Olson) Robinson.
Robinson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Wabash College in 1963. Three years later he earned his Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1970 from the University of Cincinnati.
Robinson began his career as a scientist at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center in 1972 and held it for fourteen years. In 1982, he took a position of an assistant director at the Institute on Aging of the University of Wisconsin, where he worked until 1984. Also Jerry worked as a grants associate at the National Institutes of Health from 1986 to 1987.
In 1987, he became a health scientist administrator at National Institute of Environmental Health Science, where he served until 1995. Robinson held the position of a chief of organs and system toxicology division at the same university in 1993-1995. Since 1995 he has been a director of regional primate research centers and acquired immune deficiency syndrome and animal model programs at National Center for Research Resources.
Robinson is a member of American Society of Andrology, American Society of Primatology, Society for Study of Reproduction and Endocrine Society.
On August 30, 1969 Jerry Robinson married Sharon Annette Meismer. They have 2 children.
