Yan was born on November 10, 1959 in Datong, Shanxi, China; the son of Renyan Yan and Yuewen Cai. He arrived in Sweden in 1989.
Yan received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Energy Processes from Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden in 1991.
Yan began his career as a research assistant and assistant professor at Tianjin University in September 1983. Six years later in September, he took a position of a visiting scientist and an assistant professor in February 1992 at Royal Institute of Technology. Then in March 1997, Jerry was appointed an associate professor of energy processes at the same university. He worked as a chair professor & head of energy engineering at Luleå University of Technology from July 2001 to December 2012.
Since 2005 he has worked as a chair professor at Mälardalen University and Royal Institute of Technology. Since 2013 Yan has been a director of EU-China Applied Energy CSC Program, an exchange program with over 15 universities in EU together with China Scholarship Council with a 100 milion RMB scholarship to support 100 PhD students and 50 post-doc fellows. Also since 2013 he has served as a director of Future Energy Profile funded by Swedish Knowledge Foundation and companies including ABB with 10 million Euro.
In addition Yan is an editor-in-chief of the international journal, Applied Energy, and advisory editor of Energy Procedia. He is editor-in-chief of Handbook of Clean Energy Systems. He is also associate editor and editorial board member of several international journals.

Yan serves as the advisory expert to the United Nation, European Union Commission, Asian Development Bank and other international organizations. He is an overseas assessor of Chinese Academy of Sciences and academic advisor to Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong City University.
In addition Jerry is the conference chair of ICAE-International Conference on Applied Energy in Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, China, South Africa, Taiwan and conference chair of other international conferences.
On January 24, 1986 Jerry Yan married Nikki Xiaoyan Yan. They have 2 children.
