As an admiring student of Joseph Schumpeter, I have tried in my earlier published works to synthesise his concepts of innova-
tional activity and the dynamics of creative destruction on the one hand and static models of competition on the other. My Competition in the Rayon Industry and The Fertilizer Industry were attempts to effect this type of synthesis through the instrument of specific industry studies. Later I centred my attention more directly on the public policy implications of the structureconduct-performance model of industrial organisation, especially the extent of which business conduct could in a statistical sense be predicted from measures of market structure.
My conclusions on this matter in view of the available information at the time were summarised in article 6 above. As it became clearer to me that so many factors conditioned the structureconduct relationship, I directed my research toward the measurable importance of these factors, especially the technological horizon, the opportunity for product innovation, and what might broadly be defined as creative competitive strategies. A book-length manuscript setting forth this analysis is near completion, and given the tentative title Oligopolistic Competition: Studies in Structure and Business Conduct.
