Jiazhen Tan was born on September 15, 1909 in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China. He was the son of C. Y. Tan and M. Y. Yang.
From 1926 to 1930, Jiazhen Tan did his undergraduate study at Soochow University. In 1932, he received Master of Science from Yenching University. Jiazhen Tan continued his study in the United States and received Doctor of Philosophy from the California Institute of Technology in 1937, under the supervision of Theodosius Dobzhansky.
After Jiazhen Tan returned China, he became a professor at the Department of Biology of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. In 1952, he was transferred to Fudan University in Shanghai. Tan founded the first department of genetics in China at Fudan University.
Jiazhen Tan died on 1 November 2008 of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome at the age of 99 in Shanghai.
