Background
Jihe Satsuma was born in 1821 in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) in a farmer's home. His father having died when he was a child.

He was apprenticed to a cotton cloth wholesaler's in Tokyo at the age of nine and served there for more than 30 years.
Career
Jihe Satsuma opened his own shop of cotton yarn and cotton and silk textiles in Nihonbashi in Tokyo (1867). He seized every opportunity for making money in the turbulent Meiji Restoration period (1868) established branches in many parts of japan and became a magnate.
