She was a Benton Fellow in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Chicago and studied at Leningrad State University, United States.S.R. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Russian Language and Literature from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. After 30 years at Cable News Network, she left in 2013, but remains a foreign affairs correspondent. Based in the network’s Washington, District of Columbia, bureau, Dougherty covers United States. foreign policy. She is currently a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Dougherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 at age 50.
