You Got Screwed!: Why Wall Street Tanked and How You Can Prosper
(You've been screwed. You've been bludgeoned, skewered, cr...)
You've been screwed. You've been bludgeoned, skewered, crushed, mutilated by the stock market. Every day you read about another corporate scandal: loans to CEOs that didn't have to be repaid, accounting "irregularities," profits that never existed. You think the stock market must have been rigged. And you're right. You were betrayed by the stock promotion machine, the mutual fund managers, the brokers, analysts, strategists, and stock gurus who brainwashed you into buying and holding and believing that stocks, like parents, always come through and bail you out in the end. So now what do you do? Where do you put your money? You can't just leave it in the bank or stuff it under the mattress. For fourteen years Jim Cramer ran a hedge fund that compounded money at a rate of 24 percent annually after fees, and then he got out at the end of 2000. He knows that there are ways to make money, smart ways that don't require you to own stocks blindly. There are other investments that won't send you to the poorhouse. This book will tell you what went wrong, who the bad guys were, and what you have to do to restore your financial health. You can't just close your eyes. Ignoring Wall Street isn't the answer. Cash alone isn't the answer. This book has the answers.

Jim Cramer is an American financial news correspondent, stockbroker, the author of best-selling books, and the host of Mad Money on CNBC. Cramer is the founder of TheStreet.com. and Cramer, Berkowitz & Co.
Background
Jim Cramer was born as James Joseph Cramer on February 10, 1955, in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, United States. He is the son of N. Ken Cramer and Louise A. Cramer. Jim's parents were hardworking and creative individuals. His mother was an artist, and his father was an entrepreneur who owned a company that sold wrapping paper, boxes, and bags to retailers.
Education
Jim Cramer attended Harvard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government in 1977 graduating magna cum laude and his Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School in 1984.
As a young man, Cramer sold soda and ice cream at Veterans Stadium at local Phillies games. His journalism experience began at Harvard College when he became the President and Editor in Chief of the Harvard Crimson during his senior year.
In 1978, Cramer began working as a reporter. He covered the Ted Bundy murders in Tallahassee, Florida where he worked for a Tallahassee Democrat, and for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. Cramer was robbed many times in Florida and was even forced to live in his car at one point.
Jim helped Steve Brill launch American Lawyer magazine before attending Harvard Law School and earning a law degree. Upon graduating and passing the New York State Bar Examination and being admitted to the New York State Bar.
While at Harvard Law School, Cramer began investing in the stock market and even went as far as promoting his stock picks. He discovered an interest in stocks, became enthralled with the nascent 24-hour cable-television business news channels, and sought to try his hand at inventment counseling. His first client was Harvard Law faculty member and The New Republic editor and owner Martin Peretz who gave him $500,000 to invest. Cramer’s success with Peretz’s account led to a job a stockbroker with investment bank Goldman Sachs in 1984, shortly after he had earned a law degree from Harvard.
Cramer left Goldman in 1987 to open a hedge fund, Cramer Levy Partners (Cramer & Co., later Cramer, Berkowitz & Co.). Jim's compounded rate of return was 24 percent after all fees for 14 years at Cramer Berkowitz. Cramer ran his fund from 1987 to 2001 and had only one year of negative returns. He retired from his hedge fund in 2001, where he finished with one of the best records in the business, including having 36 percent-plus a year in 2000, which regularly earned him more than $10 million annually. The hedge fund was then taken over by Jeff Berkowitz, Cramer's former partner.
In 1996 Cramer and Peretz founded TheStreet.com, a financial analysis website that provides commentary and advice on the stock market. Cramer is the second-largest shareholder of the company and, at one point, the company reached a market cap of $1.7 billion. As of May 2019, however, the Nasdaq has the market cap of TheStreet.com listed at $37.8 million.
From 2001 he began hosting a syndicated radio show, Jim Cramer’s Real Money and co-hosted America Now, Kudlow & Cramer (2002-2005), Squawk Box, and Squawk On The Street. While Cramer worked at his fund he helped start SmartMoney for Dow Jones and was its financial journalist and editor as well as at the New York magazine and New Republic.
In 2005, Jim Cramer signed on to be the host of the CNBC show Mad Money, for which he is most well-known. The goal of the show is to teach its viewers how to think like professional investors and not to tell people what to think. The popularity of the show has risen consistently over the past 10 years making it one of the most popular investment shows on CNBC.
Cramer's success on Mad Money has allowed him to host and appear as a guest on multiple investment shows across multiple broadcasting companies. In addition, Cramer has been a guest on prominent shows unrelated to investment finance, such as Arrested Development, The Tonight Show, and The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
In 2009, at a time when many financial gurus were criticized for having failed to give the public a proper warning of how dire the economic climate actually would become before the worldwide recession, Cramer entered into a number of notable public squabbles with figures such as comedian and host of The Daily Show Jon Stewart, Nobel laureate Paul Krugman, and New York University professor Nouriel Roubini.
In December 2013, Cramer published the book, Jim Cramer’s Get Rich Carefully, in which he creates a guide to high-yield, low-risk investing. Cramer is also the author of Jim Cramer’s Getting Back to Even, Stay Mad for Life: Get Rich, Stay Rich, Mad Money: Watch TV, Get Rich, Jim Cramer’s RealMoney and Confessions of a Street Addict.
