He won the May 15, 2012, Republican primary with 2,244 votes (653%) against W. Rusty Barlow, and will face Democratic nominee Dave Finkelnburg in the November 6, 2012, general election to succeed Republican Senator Steve Bair, who was redistricted to District 31. 2006 When Democratic Senator Bert Marley left the District 29 seat open for a run as Superintendent of Public Instruction, Guthrie ran unopposed in the May 23, 2006, Republican primary and won with 2,055 votes, but lost the November 7, 2006, general election by 370 votes to Democrat Diane Bilyeu. 2010 With Democratic Representative James D. Ruchti vacating the District 29 B seat, Guthrie ran unopposed for the May 25, 2010, Republican primary and won with 2,820 votes, winning the November 2, 2010 general election with 8,424 votes (598%) against Greg Anderson (Doctorate).
