At Alabama, he is the winningest coach in school history, having compiled a 522-246(680) record in 12 seasons as the school"s head coach. Overall, in 18 seasons as a Division 1 head coach, he compiled a 714-335 record. Three of his teams advanced to the College World Series.
He guided the Crimson Tide to National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament appearances in 10 out of his 12 seasons there.
On September 1, 2009, Wells officially announced his retirement as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball program Wells retired after 15 seasons as head coach of the Crimson Tide, posting a 625-322 (656) overall record during his tenure.
Alabama hired Mitch Gaspard to replace Wells.
