He played for Kickers Offenbach, Turn- und Sportverein 1860 München, Hamburger SV, 1. Football Club Köln and Football Club Homburg of the Bundesliga and for Austria Salzburg of Austria. After his playing career, Hartwig worked as a coach at Football Club Augsburg in 1989 and Football Club Sachsen Leipzig in 1990.
He entered the television business, where he has been working ever since, whilst also appearing in the theatre as an actor.
