Born in Dysart, Fife, McClelland made his debut for Harry Evans" late in the 1930-1931 season, in a 3–3 draw against his former club, Bolton Wanderers, at Bloomfield Road on 21 February 1931. He scored the Seasiders" second goal. He went on to make a further 12 league appearances that season, scoring three more goals (including two in a 5–1 victory at home to his future club,, on 21 March).
In 1931-1932, McClelland made 15 league appearances and scored six goals.
The following campaign, 1932-1933, he made 38 league appearances and scored 15 goals. McClelland left for Bradford Park Avenue in the summer.
McClelland joined at the start of the 1936-1937 campaign, making his debut in the 3–1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on 2 September. After his career with ended, he was given a coaching role with the club, looking after the MUJAC (Junior Athletic Club) players from the beginning of the 1938-1939 season.
He remained in a coaching role with until the outbreak of the Second World War.
