Jirokichi Debuchi made many new stories based on Chinese and Western novels and what actually happened in Japan. They are not necessarily comical and include Botan Doro, a ghost story, and Shiobara Tasulce, based on the life of a feudal merchant. Encho was reputed to be a master of ninjobanashi, or stories of plebeian life.
