Background
Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee was born on April 23, 1893 in Bangladesh. He was the eldest son of his parents, Shri Durgadas Mukherjee and Shrimati Saratshashi Devi. His father had a brilliant academic career and became the Principal of the Raj Chandra College, Barisal. He gave it up later in favour of a Provincial JudiciaI Service. Jnanendra Nath lost his father when he was only twelve years old, and was brought up along with his younger brother.
Education
From the Municipal high School, Burdwan, Mukherjee appeared in March 1909 at the last Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University and got a District Scholarship. Jnanendra Nath was a student of Presidency College (now Presidency University) (1909–1915) and received his Bachelor of Science (1913) and Master of Science (1915) degrees of the Calcutta University. Based on his thesis for Master of Science a paper on Electric Synthesis of Colloids was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Career
In 1921-1945 Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee worked at the University of Calcutta as the Professor of Chemistry. Later he was a Director at Indian Agricultural Research lnstitute in New Delhi (1945-1950). In 1950-1952 - Director at Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee.
Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee futher worked as Administrator, Board of Secondary Education, Government of West Bengal & Scientific Adviser on Agriculture at Forestry & Animal Husbandry, Government of West Bengal (1954-1956). Since 1960 he was a Chairman of Land Utilization Board, Government of West Bengal. Moreover, in 1948 he was a Chairman of Homoeopathic Enquiry Committee (Government of Uttar Pradesh), of Scientific Research Committee (1952-1955). Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee was a Leader of many Scientific Delegations. During his career he toured Europe, USA & Canada.
