Jo Clayton was born Patricia Jo Clayton in Modesto, California, United States, and was raised in the area along with two sisters by her farmsteading parents.
Clayton graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Southern California in 1963.
Early in her career, Clayton taught in public schools around the Los Angeles area. She then joined the Catholic Church and became a novice. For a time, she served in a teaching order of nuns and then began work with the Orleans Parish School Board as a high school teacher of English in New Orleans, Louisiana. She pursued work as an artist as well and painted pictures in New Orleans’ Jackson Square.
Among Clayton’s books are La Marchos, Irsud, A Bait of Dreams, and Wild Magic. She also penned trilogies such as “Duel of Sorcery”, “Skeen”, and the “Soul Drinker”. Clayton’s latter work included the “Drums of Chaos” series, featuring Drum Warning and Drum Calls. The third volume, Drums of Chaos, remained incomplete at the time of her death; Clayton’s literary executor Katharine Kerr is expected to see completion of the work. Online communication played a significant role in Clayton’s later life. She was actually “saved from immediate death [when she first became ill] because of the science fiction community on Genie, a nationwide computer bulletin board”, according to Fiscus. When Clayton stopped posting notices, her fans became concerned and checked on her. When she was diagnosed with cancer and hospitalized without health insurance, her fans engaged in a campaign to raise funds to cover her expenses. As a result, the Oregon SF Emergency Fund was established and, following her death, was later renamed in her honor. The Fund will continue to help other Pacific Northwest writers of science fiction and fantasy.
