Joachim Patinir was born about 1480 in Dinant, Namur, Belgium.
Joachim Patinir probably studied along with Gerard David at Bruges, Belgium. Hiëronymus Bosch is one of Patinir's supposed teachers.
The probable start of Joachim Patinir's career can be counted from the early 1510s when he was believed to accompany Gerard David and Andrien Ysenbrandt on their trip to Genoa, Italy. A Flemish, he worked in Antwerp till the end of his days, including a membership in the local Guild of Saint Luke.
Although Patinir is considered to be primarily a landscapist, his works weren't pure landscapes always having references to some religious topics. The Holy Family's flight into Egypt was the predominant subject. There are at least 7 versions of this topic on the preserved works attributed to the artist.
Many of Patinir's canvases were too large by the standards of his time. Some elements on his works were painted by his colleagues, like the figures in The Temptations of St. Anthony the Abbott made by Quentin Massys.
In addition to the already mentioned canvases, Joachim Patinir's works include The Baptism of Christ, St. John at Patmos (by or with his workshop), and Landscape with the Shepherds and the Rest on the Flight to Egypt.
One of the forerunners of the landscape as an independent genre, Joachim Patinir was the first artist of Flemish origin who considered himself as a landscapist. He elaborated the world landscape type of composition.
The largest collection of Patinir's works (signed by or attributed to him) is preserved in Madrid, including The Prado (four exemplars), The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and The Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El (one exemplar in each). Other examples of his art can be found at the National Gallery, London, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
