At Goa he studied Japanese and when St. Xavier left for Japan he accompanied his master. St. Xavier' s part y reached Kagoshima (1549). One of Xavier' s disciples, Torres , went on to Hirado while Fernande s accompanied his master to Yamaguchi. When the Portuguese priests were received in audience by Yoshitaka Ouchi, Fernandes read him the outlines of Christianity.
After Balthasar Gago arrived in Bungo as chief missionary he joined him as an assistant. When Gag o was sent to Hakata he also went along and helped in building churches and missions there (1558). Later he preached in Hiroshima and Hirado and died at the latter place (1567).
Fernandes was very proficient in Japanese in which language he used to preach and also writ e religious books.
