Hall graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Indiana with her B.A. in English (magna cum laude) in 1969. Then she received from the University of Notre Dame her Master of Arts in English in 1970 and her Doctor of Philosophy in English in 1976.
Hall worked as general reporter between 1966 and 1969 at Franklin News-Herald, Franklin, Pennsylvania. She was a teaching assistant at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana in 1971-1972, then a part-time instructor in 1973-1974. After that she became an instructor at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Notre Dame, Indiana from 1974 until 1978. Hall also was a part-time instructor at the University of Mississippi between 1979 and 1983. Later she began working at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts as a preceptor for junior English tutorials from 1983 untill1984, but then came back to her previous job at the University of Mississippi since 1984.
She has been a member of Society for the Study of Southern Literature, South Central Modern Language Association, South Atlantic Modern Language Association, Modern Language Association, Mississippi Philological Association.
Joan married J.R. Hall, August 17, 1974. Children: Jennifer, Justin.
