Joan Sandin was born on April 30, 1942 in Watertown, Wisconsin, United States, into the family of Robert L. and Frances K. (Somers) Sandin.
In 1964 Joan received Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona.
Joan Sandin devoted the whole her career to illustrating ang writing her own books. Sandin lived in Sweden for more than a decade before returning to the United States in the mid-1980s. Her extensive travels in Europe and Mexico as well as the United States have inspired her work. Illustrations for "The Long Way to a New Land" have been exhibited in solo shows in Sweden and the United States. Artwork is represented in the Kerlan Collection. Among the many books Sandin has illustrated is "A Bear for Miguel", by Elaine Maria Alphin, an unusual story for early readers, according to reviewers, but one that is effectively done and sensitively rendered in pictures and words.
Sandin has translated several books from Swedish into English. Among those for children is "Boo and Baa in a Party Mood" and "Boo and Baa in Windy Weather", two picture books written by Olof and Lea Landstrom featuring a couple of hapless lambs. Sandin is also the translator of Bjork’s tribute to the children’s classic, "Alice in Wonderland."
On April 30, 1971 Joan married a journalist Sigfrid Leijonhufvud, but the couple divorced in 1986. They have two common children: Jonas, and Jenny Leijonhufvud.
