Informed by research in both Hebrew and Jungian studies, Joan Schaupp searches for an archetype of the divine appropriate for total human fulfillment. Positing the need of both men and women to recognize the feminine attributes of the deity, she begins by exploring the Hebrew Scriptures for the images of God as mother, womb, and Wisdom. Intertwining her search with the themes of individuation and wholeness from Jungian psychology, she gradually arrives at the symbol of Elohim, the 'Wombed Father' and 'Wisdom-Spirit' who unites masculine and feminine and transcends all imagery.
