Barjokas studied at Hellenic American School. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1975. Four years later she earned her Bachelor of Music degree from University of Hartford Hartt School.
Barjokas began her career as a telemarketing sales representative and office manager at Northeast Petroleum Corporation in 1982. A year later she took a position of a telemarketing sales representative and marketing and contracts administrator at Medtronic Andover Medical Inc. In 1988 Joanne began working as a territory sales manager at Hudson RCI. Also she was self-employed as a sales-and-marketing consultant for the respiratory-equipment industry.
Barjokas was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, American Association for Respiratory Care, the Vermont and New Hampshire Society for Respiratory Care and the Notre Dame Academy Alumni Association.
