Biersack received a Diploma in Physics from Free University in Berlin in 1959.
Biersack began his career as a lecturer assistant at Free University of Berlin in 1957 and held it for two years. In 1960, he took a position of an assistant at Hahn-Meitner Institute. Then Jochen worked as a guest scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1961 to 1963.
In 1963, he held a position of a group leader at Hahn-Meitner Institute, where he worked until 1969. Then in 1970, Biersack was appointed an associate professor at New York University and held it for a year. In 1981, he became an advisory to Prime Minister of Government of the Cook Islands and held the position for six years.
Also in 1989, he served as a professor at Friedrich-Alexander University (nowadays University of Erlangen-Nuremberg), where he worked until 1991. Since 1995 Jochen has been a professor at the University of Sao Paulo.
On July 19, 1961 Jochen Biersack married Viola Hartmann Biersack, with whom he divorced on July 27, 1987. They have 3 children. Then on January 28, 1988 he married Nadereh Sedaghe Biersack.
