He is the recipient of several international awards. Böhler obtained a Magister"s degree at University of Cologne in 1999, where he specialized in modern and medieval history, as well as ethnology and political economy. From 2000 he has worked in the German Historical Institute in Warsaw.
Between 2003 and 2004 he was a Fellow in Residence at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
Since January 2008, Böhler served as the Baron Friedrich Carl von Oppenheim Fellow at the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem.
