After graduating in 1935, education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and in 1940 he received his doctorate at Harvard (under the direction of Joseph Schumpeter).
The rest of his career is connected with the University of California, Berkeley. In 1982 he became an honorary member of the American Economic Association.
Writing and teaching in the areas of price theory and industrial organisation, in which the latter augments and incorporates price theory, in so far as that explains and predicts market structure, conduct and performance - and their interrelationship. Most novel contribution has involved identifying and quantifying ‘barriers to entry’ as an important dimensions of market structures, finding their sources, spinning a theory of the effects of these barriers on efficiency and pricing in monopolised and oligopoly industries, measuring such barriers and testing for their predicted effects.
